MIDAS TIRES
Bubba’s LA was engaged to create a library of photo-real 3D Midas tires. The library was designed to replace the filming of each tire and create malleable assets for the agency to utilize in their campaigns. The final library consisted of 11 branded tires with 4 unique poses per tire.
THE ASK
Bubba’s LA was engaged to create a library of photo-real 3D Midas tires for 11 branded tire with 4 unique poses per tire. In order to accomplish this process, we start the process by taking reference photos and measurements to inform the 3D design. By meticulously checking dimensions and testing how different materials react under different lighting conditions, we’re able to build accurate digital representations of the tires.
The Approach
Once references have been gathered, we begin modeling the tires. The wire frame allows us to assess the flow and distribution of polygons. This is especially important for a product as detailed as tires - the shoulder lugs, tread, and side-wall all need to be designed with care.
The clay render allows us to focus purely on the form and structure of the 3D model. It helps make sure the dimensions are feeling good while also allowing for a quick preview before moving to time-intensive textured renders.
With the models feeling strong, we’re able to move into the texture and lighting where we dial the look of the tires. The rubber and chrome materials were treated separately for maximum flexibility and subtle imperfections were added to give the tires final photo-realistic look.
Once the 3D deliverables were approved, our final task was to add snow and ice elements to 4 of the Midas tire brands. Utilizing Houdini SideFx, we were able to create realistic weather elements that stuck in the treads and clumped up just like the real deal.
